It was an unusual battery tray which seems to be made to accept the German flat batteries like the ones that go in the flashlight

all have a different number

so pull out the metal clamp then mount the pencil in the metal clamp then you can just turn the crank and the the spring draws the pencil into the cutter

I keep one around just to use for various things

but it has staining / discoloration
