Athena Gorgolophas, one of her lesser used epithets, is described in a 10th century Byzantine Greek Lexicon ("She who has a helmet of the head of the Gorgon, [that is] Athena. Suidas s. v. Gorgolophas [trans. Suda On Line]) and rendered in marble by Ludwig von Schwanthaler (1840). This cameo is carved in onyx and set in 18 carat gold with highly ornate trifurcated shoulders.
